For Saturday InDesign 2026, we invited a group of ten artists to transform selected pieces from our collection through their own medium and visual language. Each piece becomes a starting point for interpretation, material exploration and change.
Phoebe Stone brings an instinctive approach to the exhibition, shaped by an expressive use of colour, pattern and texture and a sensitivity to the intimate details of everyday life.
Her practice explores composition, colour, pattern and texture through urgent, intuitive mark-making. Food, flowers, household objects and familiar interiors become studies in memory, feeling and fleeting experience.
For Phoebe, the act of making is as significant as the finished work – a meditative process of translating what is observed and felt into form. She has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows, with work held in private collections in Australia and internationally.
I loved the soft, raw texture and the voluminous shapes.
I think I thought I would approach the two pieces as a set, but once I looked at them, they each kept giving me separate imagery. Which actually suits me quite well, as I often just allow a painting to pull me in whichever direction it chooses.
There is so much more texture up close — all the little fibres and details that make up the surface. I really liked that. I often work with recycled paper, and it has little variations throughout, so it felt very aligned.
I had no idea until I opened the box and sat with the pieces. Then they informed me very quickly what needed to be done with each of them.
I kept it simple: oil pastels and solvent.
Whimsical. Delicious. Simple.
