Natalie Uhrik

Natalie Uhrik is a Sydney based Australian artist whose abstract landscapes explore stillness, rhythm and our connection to something beyond ourselves.

Uhrik came to painting after working across ceramics and film, returning to art more fully in 2020. Her early paintings were bold and linear, with strong colour and more recognisable references to landscape. She never set out to make work that felt spiritual or meditative. Rather, that quality emerged slowly, through the act of painting itself.

Over time, repetition became central to her practice. Each mark follows another, building rhythm and movement until the process becomes almost meditative. The more the work evolved, the quieter it became. And, in many ways, so did she.

“I think my peace evolved alongside my work.”

Today, Uhrik describes entering the studio much like entering a meditation. She doesn't paint in search of answers or attempt to consciously imbue the work with meaning. She paints because she needs to. Through repetition, movement and presence, the noise of the outside world falls away.

The paintings are, in some ways, the by-product of that experience.

Her landscapes sit somewhere between the physical and the felt. Rather than depicting a particular place, they carry traces of nature, memory, light and horizon, softened through layers of rhythmic mark making. There is movement within them, but also a deep sense of quiet.

For Uhrik, perhaps the most meaningful part of the work happens after it leaves the studio. When someone describes feeling peaceful in the presence of one of her paintings, she recognises something familiar in their response: a little of the stillness she experienced while making it.

Through her work, Uhrik offers that feeling back to the world: not as an idea to be understood, but as something to be felt.
