For Saturday Indesign 2026, we invited ten artists to transform selected pieces from our collection through their own creative practice, giving familiar Few & Far forms new meaning and expression.
Imogen brings an observational painting practice shaped by gardens, daily encounters and the natural world.
Drawn to the front yards of Sydney’s Inner West, she finds wonder in these often-small pockets of public-facing private space – places that may be messy or manicured, but offer a vital connection to nature.
Her work is rooted in noticing: walking, looking, photographing and sketching the gardens that punctuate the urban environment. Her paintings record the plants and gardens that surround us in daily life, treating them as spaces of beauty, productivity, spirituality, culture and politics.
For Imogen, these spaces offer relief, connection and a sense of wonder within the urban environment.
I’m fascinated by metal and, as a painter, the challenge it poses. Shiny, slippery and not a natural choice for a watercolourist.
The four panels of the Relic Side Table immediately appealed to me, just asking for scenes to wrap around it.
The table is beautifully textured, which became more apparent as I sanded it in preparation for paint.
The ideas definitely evolved over time, with inspiration coming from daily observations, lots of sketches and photos. Walking and admiring other people’s gardens. Swooning over flowers.
It’s been quite a process – sanding, priming and applying ground, alongside multiple sketches and snatches of thought in my sketchbook.
Serene. Luminous. Grounded.
