What are common design mistakes you see people make in styling a room or home?
Not appreciating the power of the negative space. It allows for balance within a space as well as provides breathing room so that each element of the design can be appreciated. The negative (or “empty”) space gives freedom to focus on the details of the furniture, the colour scheme and textures and how artwork integrates with its environment. Artful negative space also provides a sense of harmony, making any interior look sleek and sophisticated.

Where do you start when thinking about redesigning a room?
I always take into account the purpose of the room, the existing architecture and
elements within the space, as well as the vision the homeowner has for the space. The perfect design helps to create a functional and inviting ambience that reflects the homeowner's personal tastes and lifestyle.

What is a design philosophy you live by?
The notion of buy-good-buy-once is an important part of establishing a design
philosophy. It involves careful consideration of the materials and components used to make a product, so that any extra expense is offset by great quality. This approach cuts down on expenses in the long run, since it saves you from having to buy another item as soon as it breaks. Additionally, when buying items that are made with quality materials it often helps them last longer, meaning fewer resources must be consumed over time in order to buy multiple poorly made or low-quality items. A buy-good-buy-once mindset can help reduce waste and create a more sustainable world while also saving money in the long run.

What makes good interior design and styling?
For me good design evokes emotion and tells a story, allowing people that step into the space to gain insight into who you are as an individual. Good interior design attempts to achieve harmony between function and aesthetics, with both playing off each other in order to create an inspiring and timeless atmosphere. It requires an eye for composition, knowledge of furniture and finishes, and an understanding of how to create a visually pleasing yet functional environment.

What inspires you in your designs and styling?
Inspiration can come from endless sources: the ever-changing beauty of nature, works of art, fashion and the unique perspective of architectural design. Each source has its own unique elements that I draw upon to inspire creative thoughts. I can look at a painting or photograph and be inspired by the composition or colour palette, see a fashionable outfit and be intrigued by it's expressiveness or appreciate a building for its grandeur or history.

What is an essential piece of furniture or decor that everyone should have in their living room?
I love the addition of an occasional armchair in the living space. I use it as both a
sculpture and a functional piece of furniture. Whether used as a stand-alone piece or as part of larger seating arrangements, the statement chair showcases creativity and personal style. I love to make it a hero object and contrast its style with the rest of the interior for a bold statement.

How would you describe your personal style or aesthetic?
My personal aesthetic is the mix of different styles, motifs and patterns in an attempt to create a unique space. I love the blend of modern and vintage elements, layering textures and patterns that are inspiring, timeless and tell a story. I aim to design interiors that are connected, memorable and celebrate the beauty of each space and integrate the story of the owner.

What are you most passionate about when styling people’s homes?
I try to look beyond the walls and tell my clients’ unique story through the styling of a space. So much of who we are is expressed in the spaces we inhabit and I aim to understand my clients’ energy to create and curate pieces to express it perfectly and to reflect the essence of who they are and to make them feel comfortable in their own space.
