There are moments that change the course of a life, and there are pieces that change the soul of a space. We believe these two are beautifully intertwined, often beginning in the most unexpected of places.
This is a story woven with threads of adventure, heritage, and the quiet magic found in a piece of the past, brought into our present. This is the story of our one-of-a-kind vintage Turkish rugs—and how their journey began.
The story begins not in a dusty bazaar, but with a promise of "forever." As Danny, our founder, recounts, a honeymoon destination to Turkey was, at first, a surprise. A beach holiday was perhaps more his choice of destination, but his now-wife, Tara, he had an inkling of what a trip to this country might entail.
As Tara wrote just before their wedding in 2011, she was already dreaming of returning with beautiful over-dyed and patchwork rugs and ceramic pieces for their home and possibly for the stores. Danny admits he knows his wife pretty well, and couldn't resist the allure of the "Grand Bazaar". With a playful blending of "business or pleasure," their Turkish adventure began.
Their journey was a sensory overload of colour, history, and inspiration. The streets of Istanbul pulsed with an energy that was intoxicating, but for Danny, it was the Grand Bazaar that truly captured his imagination. Surrounded by an explosion of colour and people, he found himself lost in the very things that would become a cornerstone of the Few & Far brand: the traditional patterns, the intricate mosaics, and the tribal rugs. He had always wanted a tribal rug, and seeing all the rugs and carpets everywhere he looked, it was both amazing and inspiring. For Tara, it was the same deep connection, a desire to find those over-dyed and patchwork pieces that she had dreamt of. What began as a trip for two loved up kids on their honeymoon, became a treasure hunt for pieces that would ultimately find a home with you—each piece a fragment of their own love story, imbued with the spirit of adventure.
To truly understand the soul of these Turkish rugs is to understand the hands that made them.
For centuries, the art of rug weaving in Turkey, Anatolia, and Persia was entrusted largely to women. Working within their homes or small village workshops, women wove not just for function, but as an expression of self. Without access to formal writing, weaving became a language—a way to embed feelings, beliefs, and personal experiences into the fabric itself.
Every motif, knot, and colour was tied to meaning. A ram’s horn represented strength, fertility, or protection, while an eye motif could ward off evil. The patterns and colours often reflected a woman’s stage of life—youth, marriage, motherhood, or widowhood.
Rugs woven as part of a dowry carried hopes and blessings for a new household. These weren't just decorative objects; they were cultural documents, woven memories of the women who created them, carrying fragments of their lives into the present.
The story of these rugs doesn't end with their weaving; it lives on in their very fabric. Each piece is hand-knotted, often taking months to complete. They are crafted from natural materials like wool and cotton, with organic dyes that have mellowed with time into rich, lived-in hues. This process gives each rug a unique patina, with subtle fading, wear, and irregularities that are not flaws, but marks of life—a quiet charm that cannot be replicated.
As Michelle, Few & Far Thirroul Store Manager, perfectly articulates, "What I love about our vintage pieces is the character and soul they bring to a space. Each one carries its own story - from the handwoven craftsmanship to the subtle imperfections and signs of time. This sense of history creates warmth, depth, and meaning, adding a timeless layer to the spaces we love to design." This sentiment is echoed by the whole Few & Far team. As Sammy, Few & Far Huskisson, says, "With vintage pieces you are often getting a unique piece that has been around for decades! Every vintage piece has a history of stories which adds character, warmth and a timeless feel when styling your home that cant be replicated by modern pieces." These rugs are original pieces that have endured decades of use, making them softer, more versatile, and timelessly beautiful.
In regions where weaving was once a way of life, rugs were central to daily living and identity. Every motif, knot, and colour was tied to meaning—prosperity, protection, celebration. Today, authentic vintage rugs from these traditions are becoming increasingly rare. To own one is to preserve a fragment of cultural history and to bring that story into your home. But the connection is not just to a collective history; it's also deeply personal.
As Lisa, Few & Far Rosebery Store Manager, so beautifully illustrates with a story from her store, the power of a vintage piece is in the memory it sparks. "I had a lovely couple from Adelaide... they were looking at lounges, armchairs, dining chairs etc. However the man kept going back to one of our beautiful vintage cabinets... He became very nostalgic and emotional whilst looking at it. This is what I love about vintage pieces. We may not know the history, or what it was used for, or where it came from, each piece evokes something different for every person." Her story reveals that whether a piece sparks a memory of your childhood or you simply love its timeless, one-off nature, "each vintage piece tells a beautiful story that we can then become a part of when we bring it into our homes." This is why these rugs matter—they are invitations for personal connection, for an emotional narrative to unfold within the walls of your home.
Though rooted in centuries-old tradition, these vintage rugs sit beautifully within contemporary spaces. Their time-worn textures and muted tones bring warmth to minimalist schemes, soften architectural lines, and add depth to neutral palettes. In a modern home, they act as a counterpoint—grounding clean spaces with history, character, and soul. This harmony of old and new is what makes them so compelling: they are at once deeply traditional and effortlessly modern.
Laura, Few & Far Bowral Store Manager, perfectly captures this feeling: "Incorporating vintage pieces in your home with history and a story gives a space depth and character. It makes a room come alive rather than feeling flat. It's the mix of old and new that makes your home feel special and one of a kind." This is a true investment in artistry, culture, and character. It is about weaving the past into your present, creating a home that is as rich and multi-layered as the stories you tell within it.
